What Are Commercial CCTV Drainage Surveys?
A CCTV drainage survey records the internal condition of accessible drains and sewers using crawler or push-rod cameras. Commercial CCTV drain surveys support maintenance, property assessments and construction planning by documenting visible defects, obstructions and connections. CCTV sewer surveys require suitable access and an agreed scope; high flows, deposits or collapsed pipes can limit inspection. Survey X provides recorded footage, coded observations and condition reporting, with practical recommendations and any uninspected sections clearly identified.

CCTV Survey Methodology and MSCC5 Reporting
Every Survey X CCTV drainage survey follows a structured inspection process to deliver accurate, reliable information on the condition of your underground drainage system.
Our engineers begin by assessing the drainage network and identifying the most suitable access points. Where necessary, the pipework is cleaned using high-pressure water jetting to remove silt, debris and obstructions that could affect the survey.
A high-definition self-propelled CCTV crawler or push-rod camera is then introduced into the drainage system. As the camera progresses through the pipework, live video footage is recorded while defects, connections and construction details are logged in real time.
Survey observations are coded using the Manual of Sewer Condition Classification, 5th Edition (MSCC5). Our reporting package includes recorded CCTV footage, run-by-run coded observations, defect locations, supporting photographs and practical recommendations for repair or further investigation. Survey limitations and incomplete runs are identified. Manhole records, sonde tracing and CAD drainage plans can be included where agreed in the survey scope.

Common Drainage Defects Identified During CCTV Surveys
Root Intrusion
Root ingress can develop where tree and shrub roots enter damaged joints or cracks in underground drains. Roots may trap debris, reduce the available pipe diameter and contribute to recurring blockages. A CCTV drainage survey records the visible location and extent of root intrusion, helping assess whether root cutting, local repair or drain lining should be considered. The condition of the pipe must be assessed before selecting a repair.
Displaced Joints
Displaced or open joints occur where adjoining pipe sections no longer meet correctly. They can create ledges that catch debris, allow root ingress or provide a path for groundwater infiltration and leakage. A CCTV drainage survey identifies visible joint defects and records their position along the surveyed run. This information supports targeted repair planning and helps distinguish isolated defects from more widespread movement in the drainage network.

Cracked Pipes
Cracks and fractures can affect the structural condition of a drainage pipe and may allow water to escape or enter the system. CCTV drain inspections record visible cracking, its position and any associated deformation or debris. Survey findings help prioritise further investigation and repairs, with options such as a local patch, lining or replacement assessed against the pipe condition, access and project requirements.
Blockages
Silt, grease, wipes and other debris can reduce drainage capacity and cause slow flow, recurring blockages or backing-up of the system. A drain camera survey helps identify the visible obstruction and any underlying pipe defects contributing to the problem. Where deposits prevent a clear inspection, cleansing may be required before a follow-up survey. Findings help target maintenance and assess whether cleaning alone is sufficient or repairs need consideration.
