What a Manhole Survey Records
A comprehensive assessment of drainage infrastructure assets, capturing critical data for design and management.
Survey Methodology
Chambers are inspected from a safe, accessible position at ground level. This process involves lifting the cover and using specialist equipment to record internal dimensions, invert levels, and pipe configurations. For more complex structures or where internal physical access is needed, a separately planned confined-space entry may be required.
- Chamber reference and location
- Cover type, condition and level
- Invert levels (where safely accessible)
- Pipe sizes and flow direction
- Materials (where observable)
- Connecting pipes and chamber dimensions
- Observed defects and photographs
- Coordinates for mapping integration
Manhole Schedule Deliverables
- CAD/DWG and PDF schedules
- Integration with drain mapping surveys
- Compatibility with topographical survey data
- Full photographic record of chamber interiors
When Manhole Surveys Are Required
Essential for pre-development site assessments, asset management reviews, drainage design updates, and as part of a wider utility or topographical survey scope to ensure accurate underground mapping.
Access, Safety and Survey Limitations
- Ground level inspections only (unless confined-space entry scoped)
- Locked, buried or inaccessible covers
- Flooding or debris obscuring invert levels
- Unsafe structural conditions
- Restricted site access
